Rainbow Steps: community transformation and placemaking in action

Many Arcadians are taking part in the multi-year project to drive community transformation in Amsterdam’s financial district, the Zuidas, turning it into a vibrant business, commercial, and residential area. The city aimed to weave how it values and celebrates urban inclusivity and diversity into the transformation of this important part of town. The goal was to create a permanent symbol of these values that is seamlessly integrated into the newly built environment of the Zuidas.

Senior Architect Designer Marianne van Lochem is our integral design lead for our work on Amsterdam South station at the Zuidas. Marianne designed a canopy for a key stairway in the station, featuring the Progress Pride Flag. Exemplifying urban placemaking, the ‘Rainbow Steps’ project earned residents’ recognition as the best design to realize in the renovation of the financial district’s mobility hub.
