Bendigo Station Disability Access Improvement Project

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia - Within a sensitive heritage station precinct, Arcadis worked with MGS Architects to develop the preliminary design for a new pedestrian footbridge comprising lifts, stairs and ramps that provide a fully accessible connection between platforms.

The design draws on local and contextual historic references. Examples include the contemporary integration of polychromatic brickwork cladding to the lift cores, and a custom laser cut aluminium screen with integrated graphic that tells the story of the history of the railway station and its relationship to the development of Bendigo. Integration of the new pedestrian footbridge within the context of the existing heritage station precinct is of great importance.

Close coordination between the architectural and engineering teams was required to minimise impacts on neighbouring uses and to best integrate the substantial structure with its surrounding context. The team had to develop a design with careful consideration of constructability and minimal disruption to station and rail operations and adjacent heritage structures.

The client of the project is VicTrack with the involvement of other stakeholders including City of Greater Bendigo, V/Line, Transport for Victoria and Public Transport Victoria.  The end design was positively received and endorsed by stakeholders whilst presenting value for money.
