Arcadis, the leading global Design & Consultancy firm for natural and built assets, in association with APP, have been appointed as the Independent Certifier on Canberra’s light rail project.

As part of the ACT Government’s vision to deliver a truly sustainable and creative city, Canberra’s light rail project aims to provide incentives for people to use public transport while managing congestion caused by population growth. The first stage of the project will see the development of the City to Gungahlin line, a 12 kilometre route providing a 6 minute peak-service for commuters alongside a 10-15 minute off-peak service. The line will include 13 stops and 14 light rail vehicles each of which include the capacity to hold more than 200 people.

As a Public Private Partnership (PPP) with the ACT Government, Canberra Metro have been appointed to deliver the project which is a consortium consisting of Pacific Partnerships, Mitsubishi Corporation, John Holland, CAF DB International, Aberdeen Asset Management, CPB Contractors, and Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi.

Arcadis, as Independent Certifier alongside APP, will be required to review and verify the design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the light rail and its associated infrastructure according to the contract documentation outlined by the Territory Government.

Malcolm McDowall, Managing Director Environment and Project Services: “The development of a light rail in Canberra will not only deliver a modern transport system that meets the requirements of a rapidly growing and changing city, help reduce congestion, and will provide a focus for urban redevelopment through the northern suburbs of Canberra. The team are delighted to be working in partnership with APP to deliver another significant verification project, and look forward to working with ACT Government and the Canberra Metro consortium to deliver this transformative project in Canberra,”

The Arcadis and APP verification team have vast experience as independent certifiers on light rail projects across Australia, including the delivery of Gold Coast Rapid Transit and Sydney Light Rail as well as having demonstrated experience in the successful delivery of PPP Projects elsewhere across the broader transport infrastructure sector.
