Arcadis acquires Environmental Strategies to tackle growing environmental remediation market

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia - Arcadis, the leading global Design & Consultancy firm for natural and built assets, today announced the acquisition of Australian environmental remediation business, Environmental Strategies.

Arcadis acquires Environmental Strategies

Environmental Strategies is an Australian leader in environmental consulting, specialising in environmental investigations, contaminated land remediation, environmental management and environmental auditing with an estimated market share of up to five per cent.

Malcolm McDowall, Managing Director Environment and Project Services: “We warmly welcome the 28 strong team of Environmental Strategies into Arcadis. They are experts in their field and will add huge value to our Australian business, helping us continue to improve the quality of life for Australians.

“This is a very important strategic acquisition for Arcadis. Globally we are a leader in environmental remediation work but until now have lacked some of the deep skills required here on the ground in Australia. Environmental Strategies will immediately provide Arcadis with the local capacity and capability to deliver significant remediation projects and meet our client’s needs. The Australian market for environmental remediation is worth several billion dollars, so it presents a huge growth opportunity for us.”

The acquisition was a key part of Arcadis’ Australian growth plan that was established when Arcadis consolidated its business arms in Australia in 2014. Environmental Strategies will join Arcadis’ Environmental and Project Services business to support Arcadis’ strong growth in the environmental consulting sector.

Rod Harwood, Managing Director, Environmental Strategies: “We are very excited to become Arcadians and add our strong Australian knowledge to Arcadis’ global environmental expertise and leadership. We have performed very strongly in Australia and have delivered some of the most innovative environmental solutions across the nation. Joining Arcadis will allow us to add even more value to our current clients and grow into new and exciting markets.”

The environmental remediation market in Australia has grown rapidly due to contaminated land and water becoming a significant issue. In Australia, firefighting foam contains the toxic chemicals Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) that have leaked into water supplies and contaminated drinking water and local food sources.

“Contaminated water and land is one of the biggest issues facing Australian urban and infrastructure development,” continued McDowall.

“Much of the land that is planned to be redeveloped over the next decade was previously heavy industry and is often contaminated with dangerous chemicals. For example, many firefighting foams used historically contain PFOS and PFOA that are toxic and harmful when they infiltrate water supplies. This and other emerging contaminants is a huge issue and the Environmental Strategies team joining Arcadis will help us implement solutions and continue to improve the quality of life for Australians.

“This is not unique to Australia but a global issue and Arcadis has developed a range of test methods and remedial technologies that we think can be of significant benefit to identifying and remediating these issues.”

Environmental Strategies will immediately join Arcadis across Australia, with all staff, senior leadership and project leads retained.
