(27 February 2023) – Arcadis and architects Hawkins\Brown have been appointed by Transport for London (TfL) to lead the Stage 2 Design Study for the Elephant & Castle Station Capacity Upgrade (ECSCU) project.

The project will see a new Northern Line entrance and ticket hall created at Elephant & Castle Tube Station to help support the creation of 7,500 new homes and 10,000 new jobs in the area, which is currently undergoing considerable urban regeneration. By boosting the neighbourhood’s infrastructure, local economy and creating new places to work, the project will create sustainable jobs throughout Elephant & Castle – in offices, retail and restaurants as well as cultural venues.

The new ticket hall is being constructed as part of the redeveloped shopping centre. Stage 1 of the project, which comprised the Station Box and connecting it to the existing platforms, commenced last year with funding secured from the GLA, Southwark Council and local developers. This is expected to be complete by 2028.

Stage 2 of the project will see the fit out of a new integrated ticket hall, providing step-free access to the Northern Line platforms and facilitating the commissioning of the existing Northern Line Ticket Hall.

The fit-out will also accommodate future provision for new access to the Bakerloo Line as part of the Bakerloo Line Extension and Upgrade.

To assist in securing funding for Stage 2, the Stage 2 Design Study will re-evaluate the delivery of the requirements for the upgrade in light of TfL’s current financial position and the ongoing impacts of COViD-19 on short and medium term travel demands, to ensure that the Upgrade can be delivered in innovative and incremental ways that can realise the project benefits.

Umar Khan, Senior Director and TfL Key Account Leader at Arcadis, said:

“This is an incredibly important project that will form an essential part of more than £4bn being invested in the regeneration of Elephant & Castle.

“This will make the area a better place to live and work. It will include an enhanced ticket hall with improved accessibility for passengers and help to secure thousands of new homes and jobs for London.

“In collaboration with Hawkins\Brown, Arcadis will be bringing our unrivalled sector experience in delivering major station upgrades to the project, to help realise these ambitious project benefits.”

Andrew Davies, Partner and infrastructure sector lead, Hawkins\Brown, said:

“Elephant & Castle town centre is going through major developments that will attract more people to live, work and play in this area. This project is about making sure the station is fit for purpose, accessible and easier to use.

“We're looking forward to continuing our collaboration with Arcadis to create a more enjoyable journey for the millions of people travelling in and out of this part of the city every day."
