Chicago, United States - Ranked #1 in almost every major pediatric specialty, the award-winning Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago serves more than 110,000 each year.

Countries from which children received care in 2014

The tallest children’s hospital in the world — 23 stories and 1.25 million square feet — the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago was designed to increase patient safety, accommodate new technology and provide medical care more efficiently in a family-friendly environment. This hospital facility houses 288 single-occupancy rooms and includes diagnostic and treatment space, clinical operations, support and medical offices, a conference facility, and a rooftop heliport.

Constructing the world’s tallest children’s hospital within the very dense urban environment of Chicago provided unique and complex challenges. Because the building is surrounded by other operational healthcare facilities, the project team had to stage construction “laydown” space to perform their work, and patients had to be relocated from various floors and facilities during construction.

One of the top-tier pediatric hospitals in the world and the largest pediatric provider in the region.

The project team also needed to develop a construction plan that deferred the build-out of diagnostic and treatment areas until the end of the project to allow the hospital time to purchase the latest medical equipment and technology. To make this work, removable building panels were built into the façade system, which, along with a reinforced floor, allowed major equipment to be hoisted into the building by cranes and set in place at the last possible moment prior to occupancy. This required significant planning and quick action to get the necessary equipment into the new building.

With proven experience and expertise in program management for hospital construction, Arcadis served as program manager and provided a full-time, site-based team to manage the design, procurement and construction process as the Owner’s Representative. Our team was recognized for helping Lurie Children’s Hospital deliver on its mission to help children grow in the best possible environment and for working to change the face of healthcare.
