Waterloo Station

London, United Kingdom - London Waterloo is one of the UK’s busiest stations. However, after the relocation of the Waterloo International Terminal’s Eurostar service to St Pancras in 2007, the iconic Grimshaw designed station was left largely disused, and has been significantly under provided for in terms of retail. Working with London & Continental Railways, Arcadis is project managing major plans to revitalise the original Eurostar terminal including the provision of over 130,000 sq. ft. of retail space across three levels. When the station re-opens the five former Eurostar platforms will be brought back into regular use for commuter services.

investment in Wessex route out of Waterloo

The major retail plan forms part of the £800m remodelling of Waterloo station, in which the additional five platforms will be fully integrated with the rest of Waterloo as part of a comprehensive retail/rail design solution. Not only will this bring additional rail capacity for passengers, but will also benefit the surrounding community by making the station a destination in itself.

Arcadis began working on the project at feasibility stage in late 2015 and achieved full business case approval from the Department for Transport in spring 2016. Scheme design is now complete, with the station re-opening for rail use in January 2019 and fully open for retail use by 2020.

We have overcome some major challenges with this project, including working within an existing live railway environment, as well as integrating the priorities of a commercial developer with those of Network Rail, and working to Network Rail’s standard operating protocols, specification and design standards."
