As part of the Paddington Basin redevelopment, the Brunel Building offers innovative work space that aims to accommodate modern businesses in a highly flexible, highly efficient and environmentally responsive development. The project at North Wharf Road is architecturally striking with an expansive external steel load bearing skeleton to give a flexible and largely column free interior office space.

The superstructure includes an external diagrid, exposed concrete walls and pre-cast concrete soffit slabs, which provide a permanent framework for the building. The diagrid serves two purposes; firstly it is architecturally appealing and secondly it allows the weight and loads to be carried on the outside of the building, meaning that the 3.5m high space on the inside is more open, flexible and column free. The structure is also ‘self-shading’, which allows for larger windows offering panoramic views from each floor. The structure goes beyond roof level to create glazed, wind-sheltered gardens on the 14th and 16th floors.

At Arcadis, we used our market insight, cost and design efficiency benchmarking to deliver sustainable solutions and give real tangible benefits to the client and the eventual occupiers of the building. We actively controlled the cost of the developing design and informed the client of the emerging costs on a progressive basis to inform early decision making. Our understanding of the construction technology of the diagrid and steel design has allowed us to tackle any changes head on and proactively lead the project.
