Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust

Birmingham, West Midlands, United Kingdom - Arcadis has been working with Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust (BMHT), the housing arm set up by Birmingham City Council to help solve the growing housing crisis, for seven years. In that time BMHT has become the city’s largest housebuilder, delivering up to 500 new homes every year, including some of the most complex brownfield redevelopment schemes in the region.

BMHT works within a risk-sharing model with private sector developers, accessing over £50 million in grant funding from Homes England to supplement finances both from its own borrowing and the Housing Revenue Account (HRA).

Arcadis has provided full design and consultancy services to support the delivery of new homes throughout the duration of its relationship with BMHT. This includes helping to de-risk sites by procuring specialist survey work and managing the developer partners to ensure exceptional standards of quality are being met at all times.

Crucially, no matter how complex the scheme, Arcadis has been able to bring industry leading insight and tools including financial modelling to drive innovation. By challenging the design teams to deliver new solutions, Arcadis has been able to help BMHT balance cost and value, helping to make its assets work harder.

Commitment to Social Value

Arcadis is also a founding member of Birmingham City Council’s Building Birmingham Scholarship programme. Supporting the council as it strives to help young people across the region is a really important part of Arcadis’s work, whether through mentoring, providing career advice or work experience.

To date, it means that around 70 scholars who otherwise would not have had access to further education have been able to get involved in delivering the council’s new homes programme, working closely with contractor and developer partners in making a real difference to the future of their city.
