Port of Long Beach Middle Harbour Terminal Redevelopment Program, Phase I

California, USA - The Port of Long Beach Middle Harbour Program is a nine-year development program that will double the port’s cargo handling capacity, and create the world’s first zero-emission operation.

Modernising two ageing shipping terminals in one of the world’s busiest seaports.

The Port of Long Beach is a leading gateway for container cargo trade between the United States and Asia. The Middle Harbor Program is a nine-year, US$1.2 billion development program in a complex marine environment that will double the cargo handling capacity, electrify container-handling operations to create a fully automated terminal, and cut port-related emissions in half creating the world’s first zero-emission operation. During the design phase, the marine terminal operators, also the end users, made significant scope additions to the project.

Arcadis worked with the designer, the Port and the terminal operator as an Integrated Construction Management Team, managing nine concurrent construction projects within an already constrained site.  We were responsible for constructability reviews, construction management, field inspection, scheduling, estimating, coordination of contractors, permit/environmental compliance and regulatory support, building commissioning and safety compliance. Arcadis played an active role in the environmental slip fill work, creating a solution to the needed expansion of land while demonstrating the client’s commitment to recycling and environmental sustainability.

In response to changes to the design brief, the Arcadis Ports team was required to re-sequence the project to mitigate the potential cost and schedule impacts.
