Arcadis deployed an Australian developed technology within a compressed timeframe and have successfully exceeded client and regulatory requirements.

An Australian aviation client had a large release of firefighting foam known as “Aqueous Film Forming Foams (AFFF)” that contained PFAS, into a storm, sanitary and trade waste sewer system, as well as an adjacent body of surface water (brackish).

As a result, there were impacts to the site’s infrastructure, including the sanitary and storm sewer system, and the local environment, including a creek adjacent to the site. This resulted in a complex waste matrix with large amounts of co-contaminants and a wide range of PFAS concentrations (< 1="" ug/l="" to=""> 20 mg/L).

Arcadis were commissioned to evaluate applicable technologies and implement  full-scale treatment of the impacted media.  Arcadis selected an innovative process of Ozone fractionation with a secondary treatment methodology using nanofiltration.

The team delivered the entire project – from design, build and commission within a five-week period. This demonstrated to the client an ability to achieve the latest technical innovations to the highest standards within a compressed timeframe. Not only that, the team were able to meet the strictest discharge requirements at a commercial scale by any regulator worldwide, generating no spent media and little to no solid waste to manage. 

Arcadis’ expert remediation specialists provided a complete environmental and human health solution to meet stringent emergency guidelines, leading the solution at a site with many complex and variable waste streams to satisfy the client and many related stakeholder’s needs.
