Arcadis was instrumental in the concept and feasibility phase of the Parklands site starting in 2008 and was well positioned to respond rapidly once it was commissioned by the State Government’s Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) to deliver all Civil, Electrical, Telecommunications, Traffic, Environmental, Water Sensitive Urban Design and Survey services for the multifaceted development.

A project with such intense public interest demands unrelenting cost and time disciplines. Arcadis’ capacity to activate ‘one stop shop’ multi-disciplinary Civil, Traffic, MEP, Structural and Environment teams embedded efficiencies and seamless coordination from day one. This meant that delivering all design for ‘trunk infrastructure’ like bulk earthworks, roads, stormwater drainage, sewerage and water infrastructure not only minimised the cost and scope of earthworks across the 32-hectare site, but maximized development yield as well.

Despite the sheer size and complexity of the Parklands site, Arcadis was able to bring its trademark engineering innovation to the project. This included extensive culvert structures designed to stop site flooding and direct upstream flows to the specified Water Sensitive Urban Design area, creation of a large wetland system with striking water and landscape features, and skilled management and maintenance of trunk sewer system designs and works.

Among the many challenges facing Arcadis was the need to work in partnership with so many organizations and companies with either ownership or site interests. This included the Department of Transport and Main Roads, the City of Gold Coast, Griffith University, the Gold Coast University Hospital, the Gold Coast Private Hospital, the newly constructed Gold Coast Rapid Transit System and a broad network of outside consultants.

To help navigate the many parameters, Arcadis also developed a series of defining project management strategies. Early on the company created ‘separable works portions’ with their own approval packages. Arcadis also implemented a detailed project program in conjunction with EDQ to accurately forecast and monitor the progress of works, put in place a ‘safety in design’ assessment to mitigate hazards linked to roads or other infrastructure works, and established rigorous weekly technical reviews so key deliverables were met on time.

In late 2017 the Parklands Project will be leased to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) to be transformed into the Commonwealth Games Village during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
