Federation Square Melbourne

Melbourne's unconventional arts and leisure hub, fusing cutting edge architecture and landscaped outdoor spaces.

Federation Square provides Melbourne with an unconventional arts and leisure hub, fusing cutting edge architecture and landscaped outdoor spaces focused upon catering for a full calendar of theatre, film, music and art events as well as providing an open meeting place for the city.

Construction of Federation Square upon a steel and concrete ‘deck’ above an operational rail yard and the buildings supported by it posed many complex structural and civil engineering challenges. This included smart design solutions to construct the deck whilst maintaining full rail operations and use of spring and rubber bearings to support and provide acoustic isolation of the cinema and museum buildings above.

This iconic project has been a standout, winning an Engineers Australia Australian Engineering Excellence Award, ACEA Award for Excellence and two Victorian Engineering Excellence awards as well as numerous architectural and industry sponsored awards.
