Typhoon - Offshore windfarm Gemini

In the North Sea (Netherlands) - Typhoon wants to develop a 600 MW wind farm in the North Sea. An EIA and Appropriate Assessment must be prepared for the windfarm and the 70 kilometers long cable route, partly through a nature sensitive area.

speed

In a short space of time they were able to start build one of the biggest wind farm of the Netherlands.

Challenge

To maintain a positive business case and start construction as soon as possible, Arcadis was asked to ensure the delivery of these products and several permit applications in a short period of time.

Approach

For the windfarm the relevant environmental studies are performed, most importantly the effects of underwater noise and bird collision risks. Several cable routes were examined, in particular morphology and  turbidity and the effects on the ecology. New water permits were also applied for and granted for the cable route and the wind farm. This also required a calculation to cross a primary dike in a safe manner.

In the Eemshaven also a new on-shore substation was planned. An environmental permit was necessary. The environment request including acoustic research and the building component, including the structural drawings and calculations, was done by Arcadis.

Result

In a relatively short time Typhoon received a large package of reports and underlying studies, with which they applied for all necessary permits. In a short term they were able to start build one of the biggest wind farm of the Netherlands.
