"We are in a critical time right now. The current level of development is a necessity if Sydney is to continue being relevant as a world city." Stephen Taylor, City Executive, Sydney.

The NSW Government kick started Sydney’s increasingly rapid transformation with its $20B Rebuilding NSW plan in 2015, along with additional cross-funding from the Federal Budget of $14B in roads and rail in NSW.

For most people, the sums involved in these huge re-building projects can be hard to imagine, but their impact on everything from public transport, roads, tunnels, bridges, hospitals and even cultural assets right across the city is set to make Sydney fit for the future.

The pace of change is fast, but so are the challenges Sydney faces. Sydney will add an extra 1.2M people by 2031, not only fuelling huge demands for housing, mobility, parks, healthcare and recreation, but doubling the city’s GDP to $305B a year to make it a global hub for trade, finance, technology and tourism.

Throughout the years, Arcadis has worked on many of the city-shaping projects. From standout projects like the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel or the more recent Inner West Busway, Westfield Sydney, we’re continuing to work with both public and private sector interests to help plan, design and build a 21st Century Sydney, including:

  • Roads: we are currently working with Government upgrading major arterial roads like Bells Line of Road in the West  and WestConnex, the largest transport and urban renewal project in Australia.
  • Rail: our participation in the NSW Government’s Sydney’s Rail Future plan to modernise and extend Sydney’s train network is equally diverse, including Sydney Metro North West (North West Rail Link), Sydney Metro, a new standalone railway network, and Sydney Light Rail.
  • Urban Development: Our reputation has been built delivering some of Sydney’s most iconic urban developments, including Westfield Sydney retail precinct, Sydney Tower Eye and Jackson’s Landing. We continue to help shape the city through major built asset and regeneration projects like Barangaroo, Darling Harbour Live and Black Wattle Bay. As the ‘push to the west’ develops, the Arcadis team are also working on projects to transform Parramatta, including the 1PSQ project.
  • Health: We are at the cutting edge of contemporary healthcare building with our team working on Northern Beaches Hospital, the first major investment in public health infrastructure on the Northern Beaches for decades.

Stephen Taylor, Arcadis’ City Executive for Sydney, says the city is evolving at a rapid pace, “We are in a critical time right now. The current level of development is a necessity if Sydney is to continue be relevant as a world city, capable of attracting global investment and trade and to attract and retain the best and brightest people who want to live and work here.

For me, the big question is at the moment is whether the momentum can continue beyond the current funded programme of works and through successive governments. If so how will these be funded? Value capture will play a part but there will need to be more. Should we consider making other government assets work harder? It's about looking beyond immediate development and well into the future that is the challenge”.
