Arcadis, City of Columbus to reduce sewage overflow with innovative modeling approach

Next-generation collection system model provides dynamic updates

Highlands Ranch, Colo. — June 12, 2020 — The City of Columbus recognizes the importance of preparing its infrastructure to meet demands of rainfall fluctuations and varying storm conditions while protecting the economic, environmental and public health of the community. In connection with the Blueprint Columbus initiative, the city will continue its partnership with Arcadis (EURONXT: ARCAD) to reduce sewage overflows and surface flooding through the Sewer System Capacity Model Update project.

A key aspect of the $6 million contract includes improving the current system-wide sewer collection model by applying an innovative model-at-the source approach that accounts for seasonal surface and groundwater flows to generate more accurate overflow predictions.

Arcadis will also coordinate the collection of information from various capital improvement projects, field findings and digital data sources to update the sewer model. Equipped with this model and live data dashboard, the city will be able to better predict wastewater flows and continue to meet its regulatory commitments.

“Gaining a comprehensive understanding of a city’s stormwater and wastewater systems can have a real, positive impact on the community,” said John McCarthy, president of Arcadis’ North American water business. “Columbus will be able to quickly see where the greatest need occurs, prioritize investments and ultimately reduce overflows into local streams, community parks and the basements of residential homes.”

Arcadis has worked with the city of Columbus for more than 10 years, providing sewer system solutions, including a previous system capacity model update in 2012. Arcadis has experience in wet weather management planning of large-scale collection systems in cities across the U.S, including more than 10 cities in Ohio.
