Innovative property solutions in the NHS – creating a strategic infrastructure and efficiency partnership

The Trust experienced significant financial and service quality issues in recent years and remains subject to enforcement action by the executive public body, sponsored by the Department of Health. The joint venture was structured in a manner to incentivise identification and delivery of solutions that lead to sustainable development for the Trust. Through compiling a comprehensive longer term estates strategy, we delivered the necessary physical and service changes to support recovery and bring about commercial success.

Working in partnership enabled our team to shape how the estate responded to delivering excellent healthcare facilities for the population of Burton. This will improve quality of care for patients and drive efficiency in the Trust’s operations through estates rationalisation and service development. As a result, this should provide an improved physical environment and services for patients and staff, supporting the operation of more effective and efficient healthcare delivery.

Helen Ashley, former Chief Executive of Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said:  “As the needs of our community evolve, it’s important that we are proactive in ensuring that our patients continue to benefit from clinical services, premises and facilities that allow the very best care and outcomes. And of course we must diligently work to address our financial challenges, and contribute to the broader NHS savings goal by seeking innovative efficiency solutions. By working in partnership in this way, we can undertake a positive programme of change that will support transformation and drive tangible efficiencies across our Trust."
