Double win for Dubai Frame to end the year on a positive note

Over the last few weeks, the Arcadis UAE Buildings Architecture, D&E and Site Supervision teams’ hard work was recognized twice as the Dubai Frame won the Tall or Slender Structures at the Structural Awards 2018 and Commercial Project of the Year at the Construction Week Awards 2018.

Dubai Frame declared winner at Structural Awards 2018

On 16 November, the Institution of Structural Engineers announced that the Dubai Frame won the award for Tall or Slender Structures at The Structural Awards 2018, where Arcadis was awarded at a glittering awards ceremony held at The Brewery in London.

The judges’ commented: “The Dubai Frame is a unique project and an unusual and ambitious application of a conventional structural form. The picture frame arrangement, very common as a structural stability system, has been realized on a massive scale, standing 150m tall with a connecting bridge between the two towers spanning 75m. The deliberately slender design of the towers adds to the drama of this tourist attraction while also reducing the volume of materials used and maximizing the efficiency of the structure. The construction considerations for lifting the connecting bridge at height added complexity for the engineers.”

Ian Burns, Business Director in our UAE business, attended the ceremony and collected the award on behalf of the wider team.

Dubai Frame announced as Commercial Project of the Year at Construction Week Awards 2018

On Tuesday 4th December, The Construction Week Awards announced The Dubai Frame as Commercial Project of the Year at the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel in Dubai at an event celebrating the achievements of the region’s construction contractors. The awards seek to recognize and reward individual excellence, corporate prowess and project success.

Construction Week Online reported, “According to many judges, this project was a clear winner in a category brimming with incredible projects. Combining engineering genius with design creativity, the project – iconic for the UAE and the wider Middle East region – was recognized by the jury for its structural engineering achievements and architectural finesse.”

Matt Cross, Technical Director in our UAE business, attended the awards ceremony and collected the award along with Caroline O’Halloran and Andrew Dean on behalf of the wider team.

Matt Cross said: “This project is an excellent example of world-class structural engineering, and we’re humbled that the judges identified it as a winner. The Dubai Frame is a symbol of our leader’s vision for Dubai, and for us to be the appointed team that’s helped to realize this vision is the highest honor.”

The Dubai Frame, which opened its doors to the public on 1st January this year, is an architectural landmark in the emirate’s Zabeel Park and tells the story of the past, present and future of Dubai. The two 150-meter high transparent glass towers are connected by a 93-meter bridge where visitors can get a 360-degree view of the city: the North shows the landmarks of old Dubai, while the South portrays the modern shopping malls, skyscrapers and the iconic Burj Khalifa – another Arcadis project.

Arcadis competed against KEO International Consultants, ASGC, Depa Interiors, Voltas Limited, Dubai World Trade Centre, Hoehler + alSalmy, Lom Architecture and Design, and Desimone Consulting Engineers in this category. The award aimed to identify and reward the organization that made a significant contribution to its surroundings, as well as demonstrated construction best practice and effective use of technology throughout project delivery.
