Preesall Underground Gas Storage Facility

Preesall, Lancashire, England - UK's first Nationally Significant Infrastructure project of its kind provides 20% increase in country's natural gas storage capacity.

20%

Increase in UK's gas storage capabilities

First

Nationally Significant gas storage project

To secure the future of energy sources in UK, Arcadis designed an Underground Natural Gas Storage Facility to store up to 900 million cubic meters of natural gas and assisted in securing consent approvals from the Infrastructure Planning Commission/Planning Inspectorate.

As the first Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project of its kind, this landmark project provides up to 20% of the Nation's natural gas storage capacity.  The sole environmental consultant, Arcadis, was central to securing its Development Consent Order.

The Facility includes 19 purpose-built caverns, a gas compressor compound, electricity sub-station and well heads. Onshore infrastructure includes nine km of pipeline for water-washing infrastructure, six km of electrical routes, new roads and a 12 km connection point to the National Grid gas pipelines for the import and export of gas. Additionally, Arcadis designed a 93 hectar Ecological and Landscape Management Plan for habitat creation and to provide habitat enhancement in the area.
