Los Angeles is the second largest city in the United States, a center of a five-county metropolitan area and is considered the prototype of the future metropolis – a city on the cutting edge of all of the advantages with the problems of large urban areas. Rapid urbanization, pollution and climate change, lack of adequate transportation and water scarcity all face the city.
As a hub for international trade and tourism, Los Angeles is the largest manufacturing center in the West that benefiting from one of the world’s busiest ports. Los Angeles is also a major financial and banking center as well as the largest retail market in the United States. It is clear to see why mobility is key to the city’s economic and social prosperity.
One way Los Angeles will be addressing its mobility issues is with a High Speed Rail line from Los Angeles through many towns to San Francisco. What would normally be a 6+ hour drive will become a two hour and forty minute train ride. Arcadis is helping deliver this complex rail program that will enable Los Angeles residents get to where they need to be quicker and more sustainably.
With urbanization and increased drought in Southern California, Los Angeles has ramped up efforts to respond to the demand on water. Arcadis has actively been partnering on desalination and water treatment projects for in the great Los Angeles region. These projects will provide sustainable solutions to both the water sourcing and quality challenges.
