Greater Jakarta, known as Jabodetabek, is the world’s second largest metropolitan area with an estimated population of 30 million. Whilst most of the land in Northern Jakarta is low-lying areas below the sea-level, the rapid population growth along with extreme land subsidence, climate change and low drainage capacity have maximized the risk of flood hazards the city will face.

Arcadis was appointed to prepare the tender and review the results of the Master Plan Phase of the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development Program (NCICD) and of the Intergovernmental Program Management Unit, to guide and ultimately operate the future flood protection system and urban coastal development.

Working closely with local governments, Indonesian Ministries, consultants and stakeholders, our team prepared and reviewed the development of an integrated plan. This helps to combine the development of a new Coastal Jakarta with an adequate system that able to protect the subsiding mega city of Jakarta against the impacts of sea level rise and climate change for generations to come.
