When: September 17, 2017 - September 22, 2017
Where: COEX Convention Center, Seoul, Korea
The theme of the 19th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ICSMGE) is “Unearth the Future, Connect Beyond.” It is about bridging the gaps between past and future, between young and senior engineers, and between developing and developed nations among others. Making these connections is the key to greater innovations. Arcadis contributes to this initiative by sharing senior knowledge based on the geotechnical design works performed for the construction of the Istanbul New Airport in Turkey.
Large in-situ tests to investigate the performance of compacted clay
Istanbul New Airport will be one of the largest airports in the world with an annual capacity of 150 million passengers per year. The airport will be constructed on an area of 76 square kilometer, previously used for open-pit coal mining. The topography requires earth movements of 1 billion cubic meters in 42 months in order to create a stable platform for the runways, taxiways, aprons and buildings. Innovative solutions have been developed to tackle the challenges of fills up to 70m height with mainly clay materials.
Presented by Prof Dr Yasser El Mossallamy, Ain Shams University, Egypt, and Gerhard Schulz and Otto Heeres, Arcadis.
