Sao Francisco River Integration Project

Northeast region (Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco e Rio Grande do Norte), Brasil - In order to ensure the supply of water to 12 million people in 393 municipalities, the Sao Francisco River Integration Project is currently the largest water infrastructure work for multiple uses in the country and comprises the integration of the river with the hydrographic basins in the Northeast region of the country.

Drinking water to 12 million people in 393 municipalities

Brazil's Northeast region concentrates 28% of the country's population but counts on only 3% of the surface water available (75% of this concentrated in the basin of Rio São Francisco). In the semiarid region of Pernambuco, Paraiba, Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará, the population has a little more than 400m³ of water per inhabitant per year (less than 1/3 of the minimum amount established by the United Nations). In addition, currently, there are stretches of silted river and water quality compromised by the release of untreated sewage and pesticides.

In order to ensure the supply of water to 12 million people in 393 municipalities, and provide supply and regulation of dams (hydro synergy), the San Francisco Integration Project is currently the largest water infrastructure work for multiple uses promoted directly by the federal government and comprises the integration of the Rio São Francisco River Basin with Northeast basins.

 It is, no doubt, a great work considering its regional, economic and environmental aspects, particularly because of its territorial reach, surrounded by canals construction, reservoirs, aqueducts, tunnels and pumping stations, to overcome the topographical elevations of the region through an extension of 720Km approximately.

Arcadis is supporting our client – National Ministry of Integration - with the management of about 80 design companies, constructors, supervisors, providers of electromechanical equipment and institutions of the Brazilian government and environmental agencies, municipalities, electric companies, water agencies, among others.

In addition, and as part of the management of scope, we are also the company providing complex solutions of engineering (civil, mechanical, hydraulic and electrical). Currently (September 2015) the work is 78% complete and the first stage completion is scheduled for 2017.
