Helping Cairns put in place the best recycling technologies and systems.

Cairns on Queensland’s northern coast is a rapidly growing urban, commercial and tourist hub. However, with an expected 225,000 people generating 45,000 tonnes of household waste by 2031 the need for modern, efficient recycling is urgent.

Helping Cairns put in place the best recycling technologies and systems as it grows means identifying a broad range of options that can effectively balance all the economic, social and environmental needs.

An optical sorting technology facility, which replaces inefficient hand sorting, provides Cairns with increased, flexible capacity and cuts operating costs by 65 percent, improving environmental safety, and attracting $1 million in state government subsidies.
