Chadstone Shopping Centre Expansion Opens to the Public

Melbourne, Australia - Largest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere unveils first phase expansion under one-of-a-kind gridshell roof

CallisonRTKL, the global architecture, planning and design practice of Arcadis, in partnership with Vicinity Centres and Gandel Group, are proud to announce the opening of the $660 million expansion of Chadstone Shopping Centre in Melbourne—the largest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere with a 56-year history as one of Australia’s top retail destinations. Serving as Concept Designer with The Buchan Group as Executive Architect, CallisonRTKL devised the design for additional space to accommodate upwards of 100 new retailers and entertainment offerings, including a Legoland amusement centre, as well as a new grid shell roof.

“This world-class architecture reflects the essence of leading flagship retail and iconic locations from around the globe, and perfectly showcases the premium customer experience on offer at Chadstone,” said Angus McNaughton, CEO and Managing Director of Vicinity Centres.

Chadstone’s new claim to fame is the 31-meter high, 7,000-square meter gridshell glass roof, resulting in a dramatic, column-free space. A product of collaboration with specialist engineers and research departments at University of Stuttgart and University of Bath, the design was achieved using 3D parametric modelling and refined through a combination of video and imagery. The roof is the first of its kind on the continent.

“The client didn’t want just any roof. They wanted the best roof in the world—one that could redefine the boundaries of what is possible,” said CallisonRTKL Director Jorge Beroiz. “Every single panel of glass is different. Every node is different. I don’t think I’ll ever design another roof quite like this in my career.”

Chadstone Shopping Centre has been a long-time staple of CallisonRTKL’s award-winning retail portfolio. The firm initially engaged with the centre in 1988 on the design of a 52,000-square meter addition and played an integral role in more recent stages of development and expansion, including the addition of Chadstone Place in 2008 and Chadstone West Mall in 2009. Throughout that time, CallisonRTKL and The Buchan Group have worked in partnership.

“All around the world, shopping centre owners and developers are trying to figure out how to reinvent their existing inventory,” said Beroiz. “Gandel Group has consistently kept the centre ahead of retail trends, and we knew that the design of this extension would be no exception.”

Chadstone Shopping Centre opened in 1960 as the first regional shopping centre in Victoria. Since Gandel Group’s 1983 purchase of the property, Chadstone has undergone a total of 34 redevelopments and more than quadrupled in size.
