Hunter Valley Expressway New South Wales

Delivering innovative engineering solutions to address complex constraints and ensure seamless transport linkages in the region.

Designing the four lane, 13 kilometer eastern section of the $1.7bn Hunter Expressway meant crossing difficult terrain and navigating the steep, environmentally and culturally sensitive Sugarloaf Range.

Producing an exceptional engineering solution to address complex constraints and deliver seamless transport linkages in the region, Arcadis (in an alliance with Roads and Maritime Services, Thiess and Parsons Brinkerhoff) also had to respect community and stakeholder issues, including Aboriginal cultural heritage.

This major project required design and construction of 29 bridges, six high-level viaducts over three deep gullies and substantial abandoned mine filling while also implementing innovative flora and fauna protection, and proactive community and stakeholder consultation.

The new expressway creates a safer, more efficient freight transport route, cuts travel times between major urban hubs, and reduces the traffic burden on regional highways and local roads.
