Contributing to the development of the Suez Canal area

Ismailia, Egypt - Ismailia, Egypt – The Ismailia Road Tunnel is a twin-tube road tunnel that will cross the existing and new Suez Canal north of the city of Ismailia. It is part of a larger development project in the Suez Canal corridor. Completion of the entire development project, including the tunnel, has the highest priority as it will boost economic growth in Egypt. Pressure is therefore high to deliver this project on a tight schedule. Furthermore, Egypt does not have the necessary local know-how and experience with this type and size of tunneling project.

Arcadis is to deliver the complete design for the tunnel construction, from concept to detailed design. This includes alignment, launching and receiving shafts, intermediate inspection and ventilation shafts, cross passages, highway design and all MEP systems (ventilation, light, communication, pump systems and a fixed firefighting system).

The tunnel, comprising two parallel tunnel tubes, will be constructed as a TBM drive using two tunnel-boring machines (diameter of approximately Ø13.0 meters at a maximum depth of almost 70 meters below ground level). The total TBM length will be about 4.7 kilometers, excluding the connecting-ramp structures.

The client of Arcadis is a joint venture between Egypt-based companies Petrojet and Concord for Engineering and Contracting. The end client is the Egyptian Ministry of Defense, represented by the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces (EAAF). This is the first time the client has worked on a project like the Ismailia Road Tunnel. Arcadis was therefore chosen as a supplier because of the wide array of disciplines it combines. Arcadis is expected to deliver a quick and robust design as the pressure on the joint venture to deliver on time is very high.


The Ismailia Road Tunnel project is part of the investment program within the Suez Canal Corridor Development Project. In addition to the construction of the new Suez Canal, rail and road tunnels will be constructed at three locations (Port Said, Ismailia and Suez). The Ismailia Road Tunnel is located in the vicinity of the town of Ismailia, halfway between Port Said and Suez, alongside the Suez Canal.


Arcadis started developing this project in January 2015. As of March 2015, construction had started on the launching shaft on the west bank of the existing Suez Canal.
