Targeted investments in schools to secure their future and stimulate the economy in face of the Global Financial Crisis.

The Australian Government targeted investments in schools as a way to stimulate the economy in face of the global financial crisis, and Arcadis joined leading construction company, Hansen Yuncken, to deliver infrastructure improvements to 205 Sydney schools.

Creation of a national, multi-disciplinary team located in the managing contractor’s office for an integrated service offering helped fast track designs in order to deliver the large volume of new and refurbishment projects in just eight months, including classrooms, halls, canteens and libraries.  At the peak of delivery, the team produced four schematic designs and two detailed designs daily, enabling the first package of 25 detailed designs to be achieved in less than five weeks and the overall programme to be completed six weeks ahead of programme.

Underpinning the project were economic and social goals so that school investments were mirrored in surrounding communities through the employment of local contractors and a percentage of the on-site workforce were trainees.
