A Northern Economic Powerhouse City

Well-known throughout much of the world for its sporting and cultural heritage, Manchester is the third-most visited city in the United Kingdom by overseas visitors. It is located around 160 miles northwest of London and has recently seen the nation’s main broadcaster, the BBC, relocate a large proportion of its operations to just outside of the city.  

The British government has recently announced plans to create an economic ‘powerhouse’ of cities in the north of England of which Manchester is expected to play a significant role. Investment in infrastructure and transportation are key for the city. Arcadis’ work on the £44 million redevelopment of Manchester’s Victoria railway station will benefit passengers for years to come and has helped regenerate the city.   

From an environmental perspective, the Climate Change Delivery Plan which is looking to turn Manchester into a ‘low-carbon authority’, involving a reduction in 41% of the city’s carbon emissions by 2020. Additional plans include increasing biodiversity and green infrastructure in and around the city, as well as a commitment to improving the environmental performance of buildings through retrofit.
