My Global Shapers 2017 experience

I had been asked to write couple words about my last year’s Global Shapers experience and it took me some time to come with a way how to start. As a true Eastern European guy, it is very unnatural for me to talk in superlatives or use cheesy statements even if I feel it that way. But recalling one particular advice which Peter Osterveer gave us during the program "to improve, one must get comfortable outside of their comfort zone". So, let’s try.

Taking part in the Global Shapers Program was simply amazing. Thinking in retrospect about what we did throughout those more than 4 months and especially what I learned on the way makes me really proud of being good enough and lucky enough to become one of the 99 shapers in 2017. There were long hours of challenging work during the face-to-face event and for some inconveniently scheduled group Skype calls (luckily not for me living in ‘strategic’ time zone). But I feel more than safe to say that overall it definitely was energizing and overwhelming intermezzo in all our day to day professional and even personal lives. And what was truly great about the whole program is that while learning loads we still managed to have fun, make new friends, and even visited different part of the world.

Most of you reading this has probably already heard or read something about the program. If not, it is internally communicated that “the program provides 100 young professionals within Arcadis worldwide the opportunity to improve Arcadis, create more international connections and share knowledge; by creating international connections, facilitating and improving knowledge sharing and making sure the challenge is taken back home, a ripple effect is created”. But what was really in it for me? Global Shapers features appropriate self-development training for such a diverse group. Starting with learning about our personalities strengths and shortfalls we then could focus on our personal needs while working on assigned group tasks. Having more of a technical background regarding my education, I have never undergone comprehensive soft skills training, which as I see now are of utmost importance. Communication is the key when you work with other people and throughout the whole program we were encouraged to interact with people from all around the world and to speak up our mind as often as possible. This all definitely made me a better Arcadian now.

Being relatively brief time in the job with Arcadis comparing with other more senior colleagues and especially working within OPCO office, it was even interesting to learn about the depth of Arcadis’ inhouse knowledge and expertise together with the extend of our global reach and all the great incentives currently happening. Early in one’s career it is hard but important to recognize what interests and talents you have and then match them with possible paths within your company. Taking part in the program helped me with this and I can tell that in my case Global Shapers fulfilled its goal “to contribute to being the employer of choice for the best young professionals”. If you want to improve, kick start your career, and connect with other 99 diverse and bright professionals while having some fun, GS18 is the right call.
